About the Event

We are delighted to share with you that we have received funding to offer a FREE 15 week ceramics and routes to employment course for Northumberland residents, with free lunch included each week. The idea of the course is for people to sign up who are interested in learning what you need to know to create and develop your own bespoke ceramic pieces, as well as learning and developing the skills needed for entering the workplace.

During the course you will discover how to apply a range of ceramic sculpting, joining and building techniques to create a variety of unique artworks you can take home with you at the end of the course and be proud of. You’ll start by learning rolling, cutting and mark-making, creating your very own bespoke ceramic tiles and coasters. Then you will try your hand at clay pinching techniques, sculpting a trinket bowl or a pot for a living succulent. You’ll learn how to create a forma, creating an inspired sculpture using sculpting techniques. Next you will get the chance to make a 2D slab-rolled decoration, such as a door number plaque. We will then build on your newly-acquired knowledge by helping you to create a 3D slab-rolled item, such as a decorated plant pot or your very own handmade mug. There will also be scope on the course for you to apply a number of the techniques you have developed to create your own inspired piece of work. The course also includes basic glazing techniques, giving you the chance to finish your work before our expert tutors fire it in our specialist ceramic kilns ready for you to collect at the end of the course. Throughout the sessions you will learn some of the science behind working with clay, as well as specialist terms and the basics of how a kiln works.

In addition to this, you will also work with our expert tutors and guest speakers who will be on hand to help you improve your CV writing skills, self-presentation and develop your interview skills, as well as providing you with the knowledge on how to access employment and volunteering opportunities. This part of the course is designed to improve self-confidence, develop stress management techniques, keeping calm under pressure and increasing self-belief. Learners will be able to achieve this through taking part in our free mindfulness workshops, that will run during the course. Throughout the course, there will be plenty of opportunities for self-studying where you will be able to continue to explore and create with ceramics and participate in employment activities and searches.

This is a truly unique and bespoke course, which is very cost intensive, therefore we are looking for people who are completely committed to taking part and fulfilling all of the course requirements. You will need to attend the course each week and must be prepared to complete all aspects of the course. The knowledge and experiences created on this course, really do speak for themselves and we are keen to recruit the right learners, who will have the opportunity to engage in learning something new and become inspired by their new passion. To take part you must live in Northumberland, be of working age and be currently unemployed. We are unable to accept you onto the course if you are in employment.

Enrolments will take place on Monday 4th April 2022 at East Bedlington Community Centre. This is a full day course and will run for 15 weeks starting on Monday 11th April 2022 between 9am-5pm (exact times will be confirmed during the enrolment process).

This course will take place at East Bedlington Community Centre, 16 & 17 Station Street, Bedlington, NE22 7JN.
