Free Fused Glass Course 9/10/23 9:30am-4pm

With special thanks to funding from Gateshead Council’s Multiply Fund, we are delighted to bring you this brand-new, 11-week, free fused glass course for Gateshead residents.

This hands-on, practical course will take you through some of the key skills and processes involved in the art of creating beautiful pieces of work from glass. During the course you will work in small groups alongside one of our specialist glass tutors. You will get the opportunity to experiment with using frits, tacks, stringers, mica powder, bullseye glass and tekta glass plus much more to create bespoke and unique pieces of artwork to take away with you. You will learn the skills involved in cutting glass, as well as discovering how glass fusing works, and there is lots of scope for you to personalise the work you create to make it really special to you. During the course you will create a fused glass coaster, fused glass decorations, and a fused glass landscape incorporating a range of textures and inclusions. You will also get the chance to try your hand at glass painting, creating a beautiful tea light holder or painted glass goblet. You can choose your own inspiration, whether you focus on Gateshead’s beautiful skyline and landmarks, a favourite pet, or the rich colours of the seasons. We will work with you to help you create your own inspired works each week. We will adopt a mathematical approach to fused glass and during the course you will develop your maths skills through the practical implementation of knowledge you have gained throughout the course. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the firing processes involved when fusing glass and explore areas such as shrinkage rates and firing at different temperatures. 

Spanning 11 weeks and embedded with functional skills, this course is a great way to develop your creative and functional maths skills, improve your communication, promote inclusivity and improve your wellbeing. Our team of friendly, expert tutors will work with you from the very beginning to identify your needs and they will tailor the course around your requirements to ensure you complete the course feeling confident and prepared for your creative journey. Furthermore, during the course you will gain a greater understanding of the skills needed to create, sell and manage your own creative outputs by working with our tutors to develop your budgeting, costing and ordering skills.

The course will begin on Monday 9th October 2023 from 9:30am-4pm and will run for eleven weeks. We will also provide you with a free lunch during each session.

This course will take place at Teams Life Centre, Askew Road West, Gateshead, NE8 2PW.

You can book your place on this fantastic course if you meet the following criteria –

1 – You must be aged 19+.

2 – You must live or work in Gateshead to qualify for your place.

3 – You can be either employed or unemployed.

4 – You must not hold a Level 2 or higher classification in Maths.

5 – You must be able to attend the course each week.
