General Iyengar Yoga Classes
Beginners & Improvers
Our Iyengar yoga classes are aimed at those who are new to yoga and for those who have some experience and want to continue to improve their practice. Iyengar yoga is characterised by great attention to body alignment and uses props including blocks, belts, chairs and bricks, all of which function as aids to allow beginners of the practice to experience postures more easily and for everyone to practice without straining the joints or body. This means everyone can work to their own ability and use any props needed.
Iyengar yoga was created by B.K.S Iyengar and is a form of Hatha yoga. Iyengar yoga is known for its use of props such as belts, blocks and blankets which are used as aids in performing yoga asanas (postures). The props enable those taking part in the class to perform the asanas correctly and help to minimise the risk of injury or strain, as well as making the yoga postures accessible to people of all ages and abilities. The development of strength, mobility and stability are emphasised through postures and this will be at the core of our classes.
Iyengar yoga has been proven to be beneficial to those with medical conditions, however we do not recommend taking part in one of these classes if you have severe health problems or are pregnant. Please contact or check with a medical professional if you are unsure.
All materials and equipment will be provided during yoga classes.

These classes will be held at a fully disabled accessible building.
Classes will take place at The Place on Athenaeum Street, Sunderland, SR1 1QX.
